It would be fair to comment that the vast majority of carvings in this country are “presumed” to belong to the late Neolithic – Bronze Age.
There’s a number of technical ways to determine a probable age which include measuring erosion rate, measuring uranium build up on carvings, to name but a few. All of which have been practiced on a very small number of carvings due to the expense.
The most common method of dating is through association with material found in the vicinity, flints, tools, burials etc. On occasions, carved rocks turn up in cairns, some have been broken up & reused, so this lends itself to a fairly early date.
New carvings when found, get lumped into the same epoch on the basis of similarity.
