Re: The Spiritual Landscape by nicoladidsbury on Monday, 07 November 2005

My biggest connections in to the spirit of place are not at stone circles or henges. Robin Hood's Stride is sacred to me, and just recently I have realised that the limestone area above Ingleton is also a deeply spiritual place for me. Ingleborough has an ancient hillfort, but I feel the human connection to this landscape goes back much further than that.
There is a cave, called Yordas Cave, at the head of the Kingsdale Valley. The cave entrance is rather small, and rather low, the cave doesn't look very inspiring, but it quickly opens out into a massive cavern, with a small stream running through the middle. The cavern is incredible, and massive, and it fills me with awe. I call it a cathedral feeling. I really feel that our early ancestors, following the retreating ice sheets must have been awestruck too, when they came across this place. But the cavern is only part of the wonder of this place; if you continue to the back of the cavern there is a cutain wall of flow-stone, behind which you can hear the rushing and crashing sound of water. Then as you get up close to the wall, you realise that you can get round it, and you peer through a doorway into a smaller cave containing a tall crashing waterfall.
This waterfall is so energetic, I always feels so excited and joyful when I stand beside it. During a recent "dreaming" weekend I used the waterfall to connect with upper world realities, and this cave will always be a spiritual place for me now.
When you come out of the cave, you can continue up the gorge, and find the place where the outer waterfall is swallowed up by the stone, and continues its journey through the cavern.
A beautiful, lonely place.
