Only too true, but then again there is the unbelievable GREEN of England. Especially when returning from the Arctic or the Middle East - its the greenness of the land that tells me I am home and glad to be back. Its all too easy to come up with negative icons for England because that's the way we often are. Unlike many Americans, we are embarrassed by love of country and feel its cool to express negative and mocking thoughts of home and country. Yes we could suggest icons that scream racism, football yobs, litter, overcrowding, booze and binges. But we could also come up with icons of tolerance, co-operation, courtesy (does any other nation say "sorry" as often as we do?), countryside, open spaces, ancient sites, historic buildings, gardens, ships and on and on and on. The point I am trying to get to here on the Portal is - can we come up with some examples of prehistoric sites located in England that we feel could be suitable? Any image that will convince the Culture Minister that a megalith is more suitable than a football trophy? Stonehenge is the obvious but oh so hackneyed example.
