Good article Thorgrim, full of solid advice. However I must add a word of caution about photographs being created in the mind before you take them.....expect the unexpected.
I have had an idea that an unrecognised stone in the Tawe Valley might be a marker of Solstices or Eqinox for the past year. Every time I have been there at these times conditions were cloudy and so I have not been able to check this idea out. Yesterday though the weather forecast was perfect for this or at the very least some good sunset shots. But....
The peak of Fan Brycheiniog acted just like the woman she is. At first, given the weather forecast she said "Yes." When I arrived she was cloaked in a black cloud that blocked even a single ray of the sun, despite every other visible bit of sky being perfectly clear. However with a gentle breeze she told me "I might." So for one and a half hours I waited and courted her. I had pulled a lot of strings to get out of work in time to visit her and she kept hinting that I might get what I came for.
TYPICAL BLOODY WOMAN. In the end she said "No."
I don't want to discourage budding photographers but getting a really good shot can mean a lot of time, effort and many disappointments.
Next time I'll pay a model.
