I got this for my husband. We are both fans of Andy Burnhams website, the megalithic portal, and have often wished for a book from the site. This does not disappoint, it is a comprehensive field guide very much up to the high standard of the website. It's well written and researched, although hubby wanted more photos... but that's him! I loved the way it was set out, the photos were excellent and its well priced. A definitive work that stands alongside such work as Julian copes ' the modern antiquarian'. Frankly, a must have for any megalithic fan.

First of all I have to say that I haven't taken the book for a field test yet so I can't vouch for the overall accuracy or usefulness in finding the more remote sites... my comments are based on checking entries for sites I have already visited.
Rollrights: The description is pretty accurate and the mythology interestingly put over and there was a snippet or two of information that I hadn't known before
Avebury: Such a large site that I hadn't understood/noticed some of the finer points that this book reveals, again very useful and I will re-read before my next visit.
Overall I see this being an invaluable addition to car based library so it can be called on whenever we have a spare hour or two to investigate the area when we are out and about.

Fabulous guide to Megalithic UK sites

If you are interested in the Megalithic sites in the UK, then this is a fascinating read. It is a mine of information but also a very practical and useful guide to help you to locate and explore the sites yourself.
It is arranged in regional order and is absolutely inspiring. Makes you want to get out there and explore. Fabulous

I love reading about Neolithic stones and this is a fab book and full of all the major stones of interest. I plan to visit more stones in the coming years and this book beams in on specific areas of the map and the sites that are contained within them. Lots of information and photographs and all up-to-date information as well as the folklore.
I think anyone interested in standing stones will love this book as it's well laid out and beautifully written.

A superb guide to the ancient stone sites of Britain and Ireland

The first impression of this book is a good one. It's over 400 colour-coded pages, with each colour representing either a theme (such as yellow for the fascinating introduction) or a region, which in most cases consist of one or more counties. Wherever you live in the UK/Ireland or travel, there's bound to be something nearby of interest.
I was fascinated to learn the book is derived from content crowdsourced from a website (The Megalithic Portal) and this book is produced entirely to help fund the portal, not to profit the editor Andy Burnham. Obviously a printed book can never stay up to date, but there's something appropriate about the printed page when it comes to reading about the standing stones.
It' a fascinating book I will be dipping into again and again, highly recommended!
