This was a nice little article. Sensibly, you suggest possibilities rather than trot out some crackpot theory as if fact.
For what it's worth, I believe that the erection (no phallic pun intended) of standing stones has multiple origins/purposes. Ultimately, though, I feel that there is a religious element, and also an artistic one. They often provide focus and proportion in a landscape. What I find really encouraging in all this is the idea - mentioned by you - that they are erected with the consciousness that they will long outlast the 'erector(s)'. In our blinkered, materialistic, myopic western world, - as if we don't EXPECT humanity to persist much longer - what a refreshing concept! As a symbol of the impulse to look beyond the present, and to act for and on behalf of future generations, standing stones are still pointing the way for humankind ....
