Interesting stuff - I never realised there was workable amounts of lead on Orkney.
I find it hard to believe the carved balls were produced for grinding anything! The effort involved in producing such an item would make it a precious object IMHO.
The idea of using it to emboss patterns into soft metal is interesting and implements for rolling patterns onto soft metals and leather are used today.
