I like it, but as a primitive, how would I have preserved such sticks to contend with the damp weather in Scotland , and no doubt you have as many woodworm, woodlice etc as do your more southerly cousins. Could the measurements have been transferred onto a pre-arranged slate? Has anyone ever found such scratched slates and not been able to work out what they represented, and like other misunderstood items those slates are in the bottom draw of a cabinet awaiting discovery.
