I got myself a copy of this book... thanks for the recommendation. It's fantastic!
The art work is beautiful. The first image is a two page landscape showing a lake with various islands and lush vegetation. The detail is wonderful. The image is so rich it took me a little while to notice the collection of huts on the shore of the lake. The buildings huddle together and are almost part of the landscape. It's a beautiful and moving image... and that's just the first page.
The stories are engaging and fascinating, sometimes dark and terrible. I was engrossed throughout.
The one problem I had was distinguishing one member of Poika's group/tribe/family from another. Most of the men are tall, dark and bearded. After a while one man is identified as Poika's father and two others seem to be his brothers - though the three look almost identical and the brothers are interchangeable. There are few female characters in the tribe and none are named.
With that exception, this is a thoroughly excellent book. Thanks again for the recommendation.
