The Mississippian Era complex in the Saint Louis area was never as large as the Cahokia complex on the east side of the Mississippi River. The two sites were populated in overlapping time periods, along with a third mound and settlement area in East Saint Louis.
Saint Louis was even nick-named "Mound City". The largest of the Saint Louis area mounds was called, simply, The Big Mound, by the Europeans.
It was located at about here.
The Big Mound, and nearly all other mounds west of the Cahokia complex, were destroyed and used for fill dirt as the modern cities grew.
