Why can't each of the theories be correct. They came by boat and they came by land. The sea was lower because so much water was frozen in the ice sheets, so any number of different routes may have been possible. There is even some evidence that people came by boat to the east coast. So there were multiple migrations, perhaps some during similar time periods. I think it's evident that the 12,000 years ago date is not early enough.
