Not surprising that they had sex for fun. You can bet animals don't know that they're making babies when they do it, and I imagine it took a while for people to catch on to that, too. Sexual pleasure is what nature has always used to lure creatures into reproduction. Child rearing requires so much of the caretaking parent(s) that many animals and humans alike would not choose to do it given the choice.
