Okay -- but if the stone is never "recovered" this is all only a curious story; what would the point of the "search" if it were bogus? And if the stone suddenly shows up (for sale at a hefty price) but not made available for any research, then the possibility of the "search" being a stunt may be borne out.
Time will tell.
Having said this, the Tennessee State Museum has the "Thurston" stone (whose background is not in question) and several other interesting specimens on display. Anyone visiting downtown Nashville can spend an interesting hour or two examining the collection.
