You are 100 % correct, on both the iconography, and the "search", to me it's always "conveniently missing objects" that somehow just don't seem to fit within the culture their attributed to. and therefore cannot be scientifically studied. and no real determination made as to their authenticity. Either that or someone has a great collection of these so called missing artifacts. It reminds me of the Lenape Stone, from Pennsylvania, which had much more provenance, and additional finds to back up the claim, however still "missing".
