TheCaptain visited on 22nd Nov 2004 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 4 In a field to the south of the road running east out of Cosqueville can be seen this large menhir, 3 metres in height. It is possible to park nearby, and I walked round the edge of a field to get a nearer view of the stone which is in the middle of a field beside a quarry. It is a nicely shaped stone, looking to be wider at the top than the bottom, with a sort of nob on the top, and with grooves running down its sides, probably due to rain erosion.

One of the "Three Princesses", this large menhir is about 3 metres in height, and stands in a field to the east of Cosqueville at the northeastern part of the Cotentin peninsula in Manche, Normandie.

It is a nicely shaped stone, looking to be slightly wider at the top than the bottom, with a sort of nob on the top, and with grooves running down its flat rear face, probably due to rain erosion.

The legend of the "Three Princesses" states that they were all once about to get married, and that they had a great dowry treasure. The three princesses somehow ended up getting turned to stone, and their dowry is buried somewhere in the middle of the triangle formed by them. At this place there is now a lake, which it is said to have been formed because of all the digging taken place there in search of the treasure !

Called in at this one again in April 2007, and despite the field it lives in being half ploughed, and half a muddy swampy mess, I was able to get in and up to the stone this time, although getting my feet covered in mud.

It also seems convenient then, that there is perhaps four stones from which to chose the three !
