I have visited· I would like to visit

Anne T visited on 12th Jul 2021 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 5 Twyn-y-Beddau: This round barrow is right next to the road, although with the twin tyre tracks leading up and over it, it could be mistaken for part of a 4 x 4 obstacle course, which some idiots presumably have been using it for, hence the stones placed on top. A lovely evening, with paragliders attempting to set up their kites and take off from just to the south of the barrow, although there wasn't enough wind to enable them to take off. Quite a few cars passed by, but no-one (apart from us), stopped to look at the barrow. A beautiful view to the west, as the land just drops down, with mountains (big hills, certainly) rising to the south and the east. Well worth a stop.

SolarMegalith visited on 1st Jul 2008 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 5 It's better to access the site from the North (Hay-on-Wye), I have driven from the South and got lost, fortunately managed to find the way to the site.

Twyn-Y-Beddau round barrow lies near the mountain road leading up from Hay-on-Wye towards the Black Mountains (Grid Ref. SO 24148 38612). Five separate burial sites have been found within this barrow. The stones on top are modern, to stop people driving over the barrow.

Twyn-Y-Beddau
Twyn-Y-Beddau submitted by Energyman : I see someone is attempting to stop the 4 wheel morons by placing large stones on the top. They actually help the ambience I think! This was taken 27/12/16 (Vote or comment on this photo)

Twyn-Y-Beddau
Twyn-Y-Beddau submitted by Anne T : Standing some way to the east of the barrow, trying to capture how the barrow not only sits proudly on the sky-line, but also how the land drops away beyond the road (and not quite succeeding at the latter!). (Vote or comment on this photo)

Twyn-Y-Beddau
Twyn-Y-Beddau submitted by Anne T : So sad that people would treat an ancient monument like this, and drive straight over it. The tyre tracks would seem to indicate some recent activity, although the stones on top of the barrow are well bedded in. Perhaps just very deep impression in the ground which have yet to fill in. At the time of our visit, some paragliders were up on the plateau (centre/centre-left of the photo), altho... (2 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)

Twyn-Y-Beddau
Twyn-Y-Beddau submitted by Energyman : This small stone is interesting. It is at 52040708, -3.106825 to 6m accuracy. I think the Equinox sun would have set over the barrow from this stone, or the shadow of the barrow would touch the stone at this time. (The bearing of the barrow from this stone is 258 degrees true). The orientation along the spine of the stone is 238 true, which is in line with a Minor Lunar Standstill on the horiz... (2 comments)

Twyn-Y-Beddau
Twyn-Y-Beddau submitted by AngieLake : This is the stone across the road from the two small ones. It has a route marker on it, so may or may not be original.

Twyn-y-Beddau submitted by TheCaptain : Twyn-y-Beddau, Round Barrow, Powys, SO241386 Seen here from the south, this once nice round barrow has the obligatory depressions in the top and various other lumps and bumps from attempts to rob or excavate it. Unfortunately, it has now become used by the 4 wheel drive morons to drive over. The whole barrow and surrounding area is now badly scarred with wheel marks and ruts.

Taken from 'Prehistoric Peoples their life and legacy', a paperback publication by Brecon Beacons National Park, 1996:

Quote:

"Twyn y Beddau SO 2414 3860

This is on common land adjacent to the road from Hay to Gospel Pass. Access is good, by narrow lanes from Hay. Blaenau stone circle is 1.3km further south.

An earthen round barrow rather than a cairn, this site was partially excavated in May 1871. The backfilled trenches can still be made out, one running north-east to south-west across the middle of the mound and the other running from the centre of the mound north-west towards the road. Five separate burial deposits were recorded during the excavation. Two were within what are described in the report as 'stone-lined cells covered with large stone slabs up to four foot long by three foot across'. Human remains found within all five 'cells' were recorded as cremated. The size of the covering stones on two of the cells, however, may suggest inhumation burials, the remains of which would have been fragmentary or completely dissolved by the acid soils. Finds during the excavation included flint artifacts and slate whetstone.

The cairn now measures 19m in diameter and 1.5m high. It has been emphasised by the ploughing of the surrounding land for potato growing during the second world war.

About 100m up the road to the south-south-east, on the opposite side, can be seen another low mound about 9m in diameter and 0.2m high, with a number of stones visible in the surface. This is probably another barrow that has been ploughed down over the years."

Twyn-y-Beddau, Round Barrow in Powys, SO241386
Visited Sunday, 2nd May 2004

Marked clearly on the OS map, the remains of this barrow can be found right beside the little lane which takes you north from the Gospel Pass towards Hay on Wye.

This once nice round barrow has the obligatory depressions in the top and various other lumps and depressions from attempts to rob or excavate it. Unfortunately, it has now become used by the 4 wheel drive morons to drive over, presumably for some mindless fun and to test their vehicles power, to see how far they can jump off the top. The whole barrow and surrounding area is now badly scarred with wheel marks and ruts.
