SandyG visited on 21st Jan 2017 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 4 Access: 4 Car parking is available at SX 72089 80196. Please ensure that the gate onto the moor is not blocked. From the car parking area take the path leading westward. Do not follow the path leading beside the forestry on your right. This row is best visited during the winter months because it is obscured by bracken in the summer.

Stone Row (Alignment) in Devon, Reportedly destroyed, but now back from the dead !

Hameldown alignment or Berry Pound as Butler calls it at SX715801. It is quite a challenge to find widely spaced & only a few stones remain.

Update October 2019: This stone row is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks (PDW) website - see their entry for the Hameldown N.E. Stone Row, which tells us: "To the south of Berry Pound is a small longhouse. 'Within the abandoned field 250m south of the longhouse are the probable remains of a single row first recorded in 1983. Five or six stones remain in line up to 206m apart, the rest having been removed or buried when the field was ploughed'."

There appears to be no entry for this site on Pastscape, but it is recorded as MDV18865 (Alignment) on the Devon and Dartmoor HER.

The row is also recorded on the Stone Rows of Great Britain website - see their entry for Hameldown, which includes a description, photographs of the alignment and the individual stones, a plan of the row from a recent survey in January 2017, access information and a list of online resources for more information. The SRoGB notes that the row is largely obscured by bracken in summer.
