The hillfort at Trellsborg is one of the most well preserved and fascinating hillforts I have visited! It has the most well preserved walls and layout of most Norwegian and Scandinavian hillforts.
From the small farm of Skogheim there is a parking lot and a marked 1,5 kilometres long footpath leading up the hills and trough the forest to the hillfort.
The hill falls off steeply to the North, East and South. In the West there is a lower rock plateau bordering a steep mountainside. Here the slope is somewhat gentler. This area is fortified with 3 walls.
From North to West encircling the the top plateau in a large semi-circle: Wall 1, The main wall, built of small and medium-sized quarry stones. L 30m, width 7-8m. Height from the inner fort area up to 0.8m. The outer side of the wall lies along the slope of the edge of the plateau. From the outer side of the wall, height is around 4m.
From the V-edge of the main wall and starting at a somewhat lower level: Wall 2. Outer fort wall made of medium and large quarry stone and individual blocks. The wall runs 6m to the West, then it turns to the North and runs 25m in this direction. It goes all the way along the steep rock hammer to the North. The wall then turns and goes 15m to the South West, then 10m straight South. Mostly evenly walled up with height up to 1.5m, and width around 4m. Total l 60m. From this wall and up to the inner wall there are stairs made of stone slabs up to the inner wall. There is also a semi circular smaller wall leading out from the main wall in a cemi circle with a length of around 15 metres. This part is smaller in height and width than the main wall. Between the middle and inner wall there is a footpath leading up the side of the slope and up over the inner wall.
In the South part of the main wall: Wall 3. Outer castle wall. Built of medium and large quarry stone and some large blocks. The wall is 22m long and runs in a Western direction. Height up to 0.8m, width 2m. The Western part of the has almost collapsed. The distance between the West part of this wall and the S part of wall nr 2 is 12m. Here is a North West-South East oriented mountain slope. These two walls form a round castle area and this wall and the middle wall forms an almost "S" shape.
There is little vegetation on the rocks. The entrance is at the South part of the outer castle wall. The entrance have a small stairway made of stone slabs. At the entrance is a information poster. The inner castle area is slightly hilly, slightly Northern-sloping and overgrown with heather and some pine forest. It is about 60m NNW-SE and about 40m wide. The lower plateau within the outer wall area, irregularly sloping to the W and S. Probably no water source within the area. The border between the farms runs in the middle of the top plateau. Addendum 1993: The walls partially restored by Bø history foundation in the 1960s.
