Megalithic chambered tomb oriented almost North-South with exceptional findings.
The chamber has been discovered in 1847. A farmer had decided to remove a large block of stone by use of explosives. When the gigantic stone split he found it to be the cover of a 10m by 3,2m (clear size 8,6m by 2m to 2,2m [4]) chamber filled with bones.
The upper side was unworked while the side facing the chamber has been smoothened. He reported the find, but the responsible officer at the department in Hadamar decided, that „there is no description of this subject in anywhere; the matter has no further interest; the peasant may remove the stones.“ [1] And so did the farmer. Luckily he did not remove all of the stones as he was mainly interested to use the field for farming. Hence lower parts of some orthostats remained. Most importantly also significant parts of the burial layers survived especially in the Northern part of the chamber.
Thanks to the report by Dr. Rossel a team lead by K.Wurm re-discovered and archaeologically examined the site in 1961 [2].
They found fragments of neolithic pottery, arrow heads some copper pieces and amber beads. Most important finds are the remains of at least 177 individuals found in several datable layers. They have been examined by Czarnetzki [3].
Dating allows to state, that the chamber has been used for burials in a period of 400 years between 3300 and 2900 BC (5300-4900 BP) [4].
