Bransdale Ridge (Cowl House) submitted by johndhunter : Three contiguous barrows at SE 60756 96814, partial view of the top of the barrow, October 2017 (Vote or comment on this photo)
Four round barrows in North Yorshire

These round barrows are situated 850 metres west of Cowl House and are recorded as Historic England List ID 1010337 which says: "four adjacent round barrows situated in a prominent position on the southern end of Bransdale Ridge. The three most southerly barrows are contiguous mounds orientated north-south, the fourth lying separately 10m to the north west. Of the trio of barrows, the most southerly has an earth and stone mound 5m in diameter and 0.75m high. The central barrow has an earth and stone mound 5m in diameter and 1.2m high. The northern barrow has an earth and stone mound 6m in diameter and 0.9m high. All these mounds were each surrounded by a ditch up to 3m wide which has become filled-in over the years and is no longer visible as an earthwork. The northern barrow has an earth and stone mound standing 0.6m high. It is round in shape and 9m in diameter. The centre of this mound has been dug into in antiquity. This mound was surrounded by a ditch up to 3m wide which has become filled-in over the years and is no longer visible as an earthwork. There are many similar barrows on this area of the Hambleton Hills. Many of these lie in closely associated groups, particularly along the watersheds. They provide evidence of territorial organisation marking divisions of land; divisions which still remain as some parish or township boundaries."

See the comment below from johndhunter with the grid references of the individual barrows and his description of the site.

Re: Brabsdale Long Cairn by johndhunter on Saturday, 15 February 2020

Originally when first submitted in 2002 this site was incorrectly listed as a long cairn with no source or description given. It was updated and corrected in 2017 to what it actually is, three contiguous round barrows. The original source for it being listed (incorrectly) as a long cairn was probably the 1963 book ‘A History of Helmsley Rievaulx and District’ edited by J. McDonnell where on page 15 it is described as such. It is also listed #5 in appendix A (v) page 353 again incorrectly as a long barrow.

There are no long cairns in this area that I am aware of, nor can I find any historical evidence that says there were. In fact this site page is the only place I could find which alludes to it with no description or source given. Whilst walking in this area in April 2014 and whilst not specifically there to investigate them I knew there were barrows at this location and others on the way up to Stump Cross , so without going to much out of my way I took photographs of them as I went along. At the grid reference given for the long cairn I took a photo of what I thought was a single round cairn or denuded barrow because that is what I expected to see, however if I had seen this web page first, then as a layman I would have perhaps thought that I had seen a denuded long cairn, again because that’s what I would have expected to see. However as Historic England explains List Entry Number 1010337 there are 4 round barrows at this location three of which are contiguous mounds with the fourth lying separately to the north west . Initially these three barrows were each surrounded by its own separate ditch which have become filled in over the years . Consequently and this is where the error lies, at first glance you think you are looking at a denuded long cairn/barrow when in fact you are looking at 3 contiguous round barrows. With this new information I went to Bilsdale (October 2017) and legged it over Bilsdale East Moor to have another look and now I can see it clearly for what it is , 3 contiguous round barrows and yes at first glance it does look like a long cairn.
Grid reference from my gps of the central of the 3 contiguous barrows is SE 60756 96814 and the fourth barrow 10m to the north west is SE 60746 96834
Suggest this site page name is changed to Four Round Barrows 850m West of Cowl House ( This is how Historic England describes it) and obviously the site description will need to be changed

Thanks, johndhunter. I've added the HE listing to the site page text and amended the grid reference and the name. To keep the site name short and concise and as consistent with other SID names, I've called it Bransdale Ridge (Cowl House) and renamed all the photos. If you want this changing, let me know.
Thanks again for all your input and submissions. It looks like a great place to go walking, with plenty of archaeology.
