Cairn and cist in Devon

This site, Stennan Hill No 1 Platform Cairn Circle and Cist, is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks website.

Further information on this cairn with cist can also be found on the Pastscape website, see Monument Number 442552, which tells us this site is "a cairn containing a cist situated on a south east facing slope overlooking the valley of the Cherry Brook. The cairn measures 5.4 metres in diameter, stands up to 0.6 metres high and is surrounded by a kerb which includes one substantial orthostat which may once have stood upright. In the centre of the mound is a 1.05 metres long by 0.68 metres wide and 0.7 metres deep stone lined cist orientated NNE to SSW. On the south eastern edge of the cist is the displaced coverstone which measures 1.95 metres long by 1 metre wide and at least 0.18 metres thick. Scheduled." The record goes onto add that the cairn and cist are situated at 404m OD.

The cairn is also recorded as MDV5846 (CIST in the Parish of Dartmoor Forest) on the Devon and Dartmoor HER, and scheduled as part of Historic England List Entry No. 1016638 (A partially enclosed stone hut circle settlement, two cairns containing cists and a post-medieval building 440m NNW of Powder Mills).
