A Row of Three Fallen Stones (Alignment) in Perthshire, one of which has a cupmark with a groove.

Circle diameter: ?, Number of stones: 3
Three prostrate stone boulders are in an ENE-WSW (250-degree) alignment, and are located about 26 feet from a Four-poster (Commonback SW) at the SW end.

Nick Brand writes: Looking to the east over the row. Take the turning into Glencarse from the A90 between Perth and Dundee. Head NNW just after the hotel, and follow signs for Gouktoun. Take a right, then right again for Balthayock, and follow this road for about two miles. The stones lie within the farm lands of Commonbank Farm, lying to the west of the road. They are accessible via the farm road and through the fields, but permission should be sought from the farmer as stock are in the fields. I found the people on the farm to be very helpful. There is supposed to be a stone circle here at NO177247, but I could find no trace of it, and the farmer did not know of its existence, so it is presumably lost.

Update August 2019: This stone row is recorded on the Stone Rows of Great Britain website - see their entry for Commonbank. In surveys in July 2018 and March 2019, Sandy G records the row measures 13.5m long and is made up of three large, recumbent slabs, with far reaching views. The SRoGB entry includes photographs of the row and the individual slabs, a plan of the row, a description and a discussion about the sea view triangle which is visible from the row.

The row, with its cup marked stone, is recorded as Canmore ID 28210, which gives the measurements of the individual slabs, adding "there are at least three weathered cup-marks on the upper surface of the easternmost stone". Their entries from 1973 and 1989 both mention the four poster stone circle, which is metres across, and comprising two recumbent boulders and two earth fast boulders, located to the east of the alignment. The SRoGB includes a photograph of this group of boulders, calling the identification 'uncertain at best'.

Note: The row is accessible via the farm road and through the fields, but permission should be sought from the farmer as stock are in the fields.

Commonbank
Commonbank submitted by SandyG : A grouping of stones at the western end of the stone row have been identified by the Royal Commission as a small four poster stone circle. Given the amount of cleared stone in the area combined with the irregular arrangement of the stones, this identification should be considered as uncertain at best. View from north (Scale 1m).
