This big dolmen is not very known and so very difficult to find.
Coming from Xanton Chassenon, in the hamlet of Denant, you must take the first road on the left, then again left, go through a farm and find a very old tarred road going North-East. On this ittle road, the dolmen is on the left, you must walk 800 meters towards the river to find it.
It can be only seen in winter or when there is no culture.
Some excavations were made in 1972 and 1973 by Roger Joussaume who wrote a booklet on the search.
The capstone had to pound about 40 tonnes (some millstones were sculptured in it in different ages so it is less than 40 tonnes now). It has a diameter of 5 meters and it is made of poudingue stone (sorry, i didn't find the translation of this word). In height, it goes from one meter to 1.50 meter.
The support stones have disappeared but under the capstone, a long tumulus is buried (see diagram).
Skeletons of two men, one woman, a child of 10 years and a baby were discovered but also a lot of animals: cow, goat, dog, fox, sheep, chicken, donkey, pig, weasel, badger, rabbit, beaver, hedgehog, wild duck, blackbird, patridge and even a frog! Were alos discovered axes, some things in gold, shears in copper, vases, tusks of boars....
This dolmen makes part of a set with the dolmen de la Pierre Virante, in the village of Xanton Chassenon, l'enceinte de Champ Durand and two other sites.
