SandyG visited on 7th Sep 2019 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 4 Access: 3 Car parking is available at SX 57887 67306. The row is about 1400m east of the car park across open moorland.

Anne T visited on 15th May 2019 - their rating: Cond: 1 Amb: 3 Access: 3 Drizzlecombe West Stone Row: Whilst Sandy G had our group here, he asked us all to help him have a look for this elusive stone row, and we were happy to help, which mentioned in Burl but not in Butler (I haven’t been able to find the mention in Burl, yet). The others in the group had a far keener eye than me for spotting the lines of stones in the grass, so I wandered up slope and stood on a cairn, observing. Not having my GPS with me, I think this is Butler Drizzlecombe Cairn 15 at SX 5925 6721. Sandy had the rest of the group stand on stones which they thought might be part of the row, to see how they lined up. He plans a return visit in September 2019, so I’ll need to watch for an update.

Possible Stone Row making up part of the Drizzlecombe complex on southwestern Dartmoor in Devon

Stone row mentioned in one of Burl's gazetteers. Very difficult to find any remnants of this row in the field, and it is not mentioned in Butler.

Update September 2019: Following a survey by Sandy Gerrard, Stone Rows of Great Britain, with the help of Megalithic Portal members on 15th May 2019, and a further extensive survey on 7th September 2019, with the help of the ACE Archaeology Group, Sandy has just published a new entry his results on the Stone Rows of Great Britain website - see his entry for Drizzlecombe 4. His conclusion is that this is a single stone row measuring 149m long, with a cairn at its upper end.

The SRoGB entry for Drizzlecombe 4 includes a description, two plans of the row (one showing its relationship to the other rows and monuments nearby), photographs of the alignment, its related cairns, the individual stones and several related features, plus access information and a section on Landcape and Promontory reveals.

The plan of Drizzlecombe 4 also includes the standing stone found during the Megalithic Portal members gathering of 15th May 2019; see Standing Stone North of the Cairn at the Head of Drizzlecombe 4 row, and the cairn now confirmed to be at the head of this row: Cairn at the head of Drizzlecombe 4 row.

Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks also includes entries for the row - see their entries for the Drizzlecombe 4 Stone Row and the Drizzlecombe Ceremonial Complex (Photos 1).

Drizzlecombe W row
Drizzlecombe W row submitted by SandyG : An arrangement of set stones adjacent to the row may represent the remains of a contemporary structure. Alternatively it could be natural, although the consensus amongst the ACE members was that it was more likely to be artificial. A badly robbed cairn seems the most likely explanation. Congratulations to Sandy who has confirmed the existence of this elusive stone row!

For more information, see his entry on the Stone Rows of Great Britain website for Drizzlecombe 4.

Sandy notes: "(This) is probably the site identified by Burl, but shown in the wrong location on his plan of the site (Burl, A., 1993, 114)."

He goes onto add: "This possible stone row was found during a search for the fourth row shown by Burl on his plan of the Drizzlecombe complex by a group of Megalithic Portal members on 15th May 2019. The site was subsequently surveyed by ACE Archaeology Club on 7th September 2019 … With the completion of this survey, I now find myself in the position for the first time in years of having no further examples to visit. I am sure others will be brought to my attention, but for the moment the 'to visit' column on my spreadsheet is empty".
