SandyG visited on 7th Sep 2019 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 4 Access: 3 Car parking is available at SX 57887 67306. The stone stands near to the cairn at the top of the row which is about 1400m east of the car park across open moorland.

Anne T visited on 15th May 2019 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 4 Access: 3 Drizzlecombe West Standing Stone: Whilst Sandy and the rest of the intrepid "Dartmoor Expedition" were searching lower down the slope for the enigmatic and mysterious Drizzlecome West Stone Row, I'd wandered up slope, stopping at this stone and looking at the nearby cairn. Failing to attract the attention of my fellow explorers, I wandered off to look at the large cairn near the southern and smaller of the two pounds. When I came back, I found Sandy in full 'Bronze Age Mode' with his ranging pole standing by this stone. We photographed it and took a grid reference with our GPS. More research to be done on this stone - not apparently recorded in Butler or any of the other Dartmoor Archaeology books I now possess. Have asked the rest of the group to contribute to the information on this stone, if they are able. Sandy plans to return in September 2019, so more information to follow.

Standing Stone (Menhir) in Devon

This stone was spotted whilst on a search for the "elusive (see Drizzlecombe West Stone Row": SID 1902 with Sandy G's "Dartmoor Expedition" on 15th May 2019.

The stone may stand at the head of this elusive stone row, with a cairn 17m (Butler 17?) approx. 17m to its south. The stone stands approximately 1m tall, 0.6m wide and 15cms wide and leans about 20 degrees towards the east. The Drizzlecombe Settlements are 100m to the south of the stone.

This stone is not recorded on Butler or the HER.

Update September 2019: Following a recent extensive survey, with the help of the ACE Archaeology Group, on 7th September 2019, Sandy Gerrard has published his results on the Stone Rows of Great Britain website - see his entry for Drizzlecombe 4, which includes a description of the newly re-discovered stone row, photographs of the alignment and the individual stones, plans of the row (one showing how this standing stone relates to the row and the cairn at its head), access arrangements and a section for Landscape Reveals (showing what features and promontories come in and out of view as you walk along the row).

This standing stone is located just north of the cairn at the head of Drizzlecombe 4, at SX 59374 67361. See our other site pages for the Drizzlecombe West Stone Row and the Drizzlecombe 4 cairn.

Getting a bit confusing with the naming of this as Drizzlecombe 4 Standing Stone, when there is already a different standing stone here (and in "The Old Stones") at the Drizzlecombe complex known as Drizzlecombe stone 4, and Drizzlecombe Cairn 4 is also further down the hillside near to 2 and 3

Yes, you are correct, TheCaptain. I have just logged on to recheck the entries I did last night. There indeed needs to be some juggling with the names here to avoid confusion.

This standing stone was originally named 'Drizzlecombe North East Standing Stone' but I renamed it last night to 'Drizzlecome 4 standing stone' to fit in with Sandy G's rediscovery of the Drizzlecombe 4 stone row, and to match the nomenclature of the terminal stone/stone row/cairn used for the other monuments nearby.

I will seek advice from Sandy as how best to rename everything and come back and amend these so it's all easier to understand, unless you have any suggestions, please?? Everything will be sorted shortly.

Not sure what best to do. Perhaps use N or North for all of these rather than the 4.

I am still not too sure this fits well with the supposed West row, leading away from Cairn 13 "which has a row running in an Easterly direction in line with the tilted slab."

Hi, TheCaptain, as you were typing your comment, I was amending the site pages and photographs as suggested by Sandy, for both the cairn and the standing stone. His comment on the revised names is "Bit clumsy but ties it in with Row 4. I decided to go for Row 4 (in the) title because geographic indicators can change as new stuff is found". I'll draw his attention to your new comment.

After an exceptionally busy 12-18 months carrying out surveys, Sandy is going to be busy updating his stone row pages on the Portal in the next weeks and months, so hopefully one of us will pick up any amendments that need to be made and iron out any inconsistencies. Hope this helps in the meantime. If not, just shout. Thanks.
