The Erdwerk von Brakel-Erkeln is a monumental earthwork of the late Michelsberg culture in Brakel (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany). About 800 m of the enclosure can still be seen as crop marks in Google Maps.
The earthwork was built between 4400 - 3500 BC. It may have enclosed an area of 12 ha. It is not entirely clear, if the earthwork was used as a fortification of a settlement or if it surrounded a sanctuary or a gathering place.
Today, the Erdwerk von Brakel-Erkeln is visible as crop marks. Parts of the trench were transferred to the LWL-Museum für Archäologie in Herne. 22 t of stones from the enclosure were reconstructed in the museum to form a 1.2 m deep, 3 m broad and 10 m long part of the enclosure. Gauze draperies imitate the tall ramparts. The finds are presented as a section through the earthwork in the permanent exhibition of the museum in Herne.
Several of the discovered stone tools are displayed in the local history museum Erkelner Heimatstube, which is situated near the earthwork in Brakel.
