The ancient city of Merv has its origin in the 3rd Millenium BCE. The oldest part of the settlement, called Erk-Kala, is an oval shaped rampart wich was around the oldest settlement.
Later it was expand by Alexander the Great to a greek Polis. It was one of the most important and largest cities (in the 12th century CE probably over 200,000 inhabitants) at the Silkroad. Many peoples conquered the city during the centuries, then in the 18th century CE it gets insignificant.
The city lies in Turkmenistan
