The Neolithic settlement on Kastraki hill and the area around it was inhabited from the middle of the 7th until the 4th millennium BCE. During the Middle Neolithic period the settlement covered a large area of at least 100,000 square metres. The stone foundations of blocks of houses are visible on Kastraki hill.
The settlement of Sesklo was first discovered in the end of 19th century CE. Excavations confirmed the settlement as one of the major known Neolithic settlements in Greece, and in Europe.
During the Middle Neolithic the settlement was very extended, a period known as the "Sesklo civilization" and is characterized in the improvement of the firing techniques of pottery, greater abundance of stone tools and the increased use of obsidian from Melos. The structures on "Kastraki" hill are mainly of small size with narrow streets and open squares among them.
