The main castle site is from around 8/9th B.C. and was constructed during the period of the Moorish occupation of Portugal. However, the site is located on a prominent hill and the area has been extensively occupied during the Neolithic/Chalcolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages.
Archaeological excavations uncovered silos excavated into the granite bedrock. These may pre-date the castle by several centuries and are believed to be originally made in the Neolithic period.
