This Dolmen was found in 1856 by Carlos Ribeiro and explored in 1876. The burial chamber was already in bad condition, having only three upright support stones, one of them is big enough to have been the table stone, but this hypothesis has been discarded since there are two anthropomorphic figures engraved on the stone.

The two figures represent a man and a woman and are probably devoted to fertility rituals. Nowadays there are only two stones left, a small broken one and the important engraved stone placed in a diagonal position.

The capstone has now (as of 2010) been shattered into dozens of fragments

Note: The shocking image of this dolmen's capstone shattered into dozens of fragments - see the comments for more details

More from Bak_teria: The information was sourced from Archport, a mailing list commonly used by Portuguese archaelogists.

Back in 2010 there was some kind of rehabilitation idea or project but I think the county of Sintra forgot about it. It's always the same, no one cares about a broken dolmen. Despite it could be classified as cultural heritage It doesn't bring much money to the community. That's the only reason that I can think of to understand the oblivion.

Translating the words in his email message, he says:
"Dear archportians, I just wanted you to know how is the actual state of the dolmen of Pedra dos Mouros that I had the opportunity to visit with permission of the owner.

It is indeed regrettable that the most imposing tomb of the Lisbon region with about 5 meters high and classified as a National Monument since 1910 is now broken in half. But the law of gravity and the neglect of humanity are fatal. This is not a question of blaming someone, but we must bare in mind the inclination that the lone pillar was subjected over time, also the type of limestone, the shots made during the construction of the CREL road and the new node to the newly opened highway or even the recent small earthquakes, all of them contributed to its partial fracture and the final blow was the big fall that broke the stone in 6 fragments. Sure, someone could have intervened before, but we must also consider that there are so many property fires every day... Finally concluding in a more positive tone, the dolmen is not totally lost, just shattered and can be risen up out of the ruins if there is will and diligence of the citizens and of the proper authorities."

You used Google translate for that didn´t you? Its Ok, but try to think how you would speak when reading the reply., What Google translate does is translate every word by the dictionary definition, it makes no attempt to put that word into a sentence and makes no allowance for colloquialisms. I was confidently told by a local restaurant online that I could drink the ruins of a tumbling castle through a reed if I visited their establishment! A Cana is a reed, but it is also the local word for a tall straight tumbler. It is a measure of beer. You ask for a cana or a copa. I never did work out the tumbling castle! Lol
As for your wrecked dolmens. there are hundreds of them around here, none as wrecked as that one. I know of one that is 7ft tal! Its on prvate land, but you can see it from the road. I also know of Monoliths and something I saw recently whicj I swear is an unrecorded stone circle. Yes the stones look like broken off stumps of teeth in the gum, but then, dont some of ours?

I tried to get to the site but the access is closed. You can reach it no more.
Since 2010 a lot of houses were built and they are blocking the passage. The only way to reach it is by climbing a big wall. There are two big chained and locked gates that could access the site.
