Misc. Earthwork in Pickaway County, Ohio.
The town was founded in 1810 and was originally platted directly on an ancient geometric earthwork, with a street layout that preserved and highlighted the large 1140 foot diameter circle earthwork with an interior ditch and smaller interior circle. A 900 foot square earthwork was attached to the double circle on its south side. The ancient structure has been attributed to the Hopewell culture.

In the 1820's the earthwork wall height was approximately 5 feet in most placed. Circleville Ohio lies on the east bank of the Scioto River. The original courthouse was built at the center of the circular earthwork.

In the 1830's some residents formed a company, authorized the the Ohio state legislature, to "square" the layout of streets into a conventional grid. The original layout and its preservation of the mounds was felt to be too sentimental, "peculiar", and inconvenient. The work was completed in the 1850's and obliterated the remaining earthworks.

The intersection of Main and Court Streets is the center of the original circle. However, there is no evidence left of the earthworks or even the original street plan. Local historian Wallace Higgins suspects that the slight rise on the south side of Franklin Street may be the remnant of the square earthwork.
The Pickaway County Historical Society has a model of the original street plan on display.

Then the town leaders decided to destroy nearly all of it and rebuild the town into the typical square block pattern.
