Mount Stewart Cist
Mount Stewart Cist submitted by ID : Where some of the stones have ended up. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Mount Stewart Estate Multiple Cist Site. First described in 1786, as it was being ‘quarried’ for its stone, the original cairn, some 6-8ft high and 40-60ft across yielded one large central and at least 15 smaller cist burials neatly arranged in one distinct quadrant.

The large cist was empty but the smaller ones contained a variety of vessels (six survived) placed in the NW corner and cremated remains with some including a scattering of gravel.

There is some variation in the descriptions of the cists but the large one seems to have been 1.73m x 0.8m with the smaller ones around 1.07m x 0.46m.

Despite the importance of the site many of the cist stones were removed and used for drainage, the final blow came in 1935 when the large cist and any others remains were removed to make way for a private landing strip. Despite promises by the then Lord Londonderry to reconstruct the cists the remaining stones were either re-used or dumped at a site near the barrow and remain there to this day.

Here is the link to the full site report (PDF) The file contains a great deal of information about the site with details of the vessels, stone sizes etc. and has an extensive bibliography.

Re: Mount Stewart Cist by ID on Saturday, 25 April 2015

Recent aerial photography and surface mapping have revealed several more circular features and probable trackways in the field directly to the north of the original cist/mound. We hope to be able to apply the same methods to the cist field and another potential site on the shore to the south in the next few weeks.

Once the images are processed and 'official' I'll try and get permission to give you all a sneak preview.

The two reconstructed cists pictured have been confirmed as the originals.
