St Mary's Well (Gwynedd)
St Mary's Well (Gwynedd) submitted by Antonine : St Mary’s Well sits just above the high tide mark at the end of an eroded stairway that was cut into the cliffside. Pilgrim’s would have visited here on their way to Bardsey Island. It was said that the Virgin Mary herself rode down to it on her pony. It was also believed that whomever could carry a draught of water from the well to the top of the headland above would have their wish fulfil...

St Mary's Well (Gwynedd)
St Mary's Well (Gwynedd) submitted by wellhopper : St Mary's Well is reached by steps cut into the cliff and then a scramble over the base of the cliff seen here rimmed with green weed, this is definitely a fresh water spring as opposed to the salt water rock pools that surrounded it

St Mary’s Well, or Ffynnon Fair, is hidden away below Maen Melyn. Elfed Gruffydd wrote in his book “Llŷn” – “The fresh water retains its purity at low tide, even though the sea washes over the well at high tide.”
It was here, not very many years ago, so the late Dr Wil Owen told me, that the local Doctors sometimes embarked when they had emergency cases to attend in Bardsey – and if they needed an ambulance they called the Pwllheli Lifeboat!.

In the book The Spirit Paths of Wales by Laurence Main - Cicerone Press 2000 the os grid reference for St Mary's Well is given as SH.139253. Main goes on to say "There is still a path to a curious holy well in a gulley below the church". "This is covered by the sea at high tide, yet contains fresh water from a spring at low tide". The well also called Ffynnon Mair was the last port of call for pilgrims before their journey across Bardsey Sound to the holy island itself. The author says that just above the well and ruined chapel is an ancient stone called Maen Melyn (Yellow Stone). The stone is covered with yellow moss, if that's where the name comes from.

Thanks Sunny! Yup I know Lawrence - spent an evening and a day with him around Dinas Mawddy and Barmouth area, and also at Ley Hunter events; you can hear / see him on this clip with me dowsing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7a_FZlrTv1Q; the standing stone is on the Portal's database - as for the well - it is not obvious, unless you know! Will follow up when I can. Cheers.

Went looking for this: think I nailed it - will post picture when I can. Incredibly difficult to work out, and in view that it is signposted from Aberdaron, some closer sign saying "It is HERE" would be helpful! Very treacherous location
