Trendle Ring
Trendle Ring submitted by mattimpey : Hopefully you can just make out the single bank and ditch of what I think is Trendle Ring on a ridge of a Quantock hillside. It is a single ditch and rampart enclosure about 130m above sea level. The bracken was to thick to hike across in September so I hope to visit again in the winter when it has all died down or I find someone who knows where the path to it is. Trendle Ring by DavidHarcombe on Sunday, 20 August 2017

Trendle Ring (or Trundle Ring) is a late prehistoric earthwork near Bicknoller, Somerset. It's built on a slope partly up the side of Weacombe Hill, which rises around 400 foot (130 metres) above the site on the Quantock Hills, & on the north side of the A358.

According to Wikipedia, the word "trendle" means circle. The earthwork, which covers about 2 acres (0.8 hectares), is surrounded by a single rampart with a ditch, & has an opening on its eastern uphill side. The hillside is steep, though two more level & less sloping areas inside the site may possibly have supported buildings or platforms. In addition, there are several tumuli, barrows, & cairns on the hilltop above it.

Wikipedia has it as a possible fort, hill-slope enclosure, livestock enclosure, or settlement, but its sloping position halfway up the hillside instead suggests to me a cattle or animal corral site. Although there is no water supply for animals within the ring itself, there are streams & ditches nearby. Nowadays, however, its only visitors are deer - reasonably plentiful around there. Perhaps in the past it was used to corral them also.

Visited this site - settlement on a slope with clear ditch and bank. Excellent view across the West Somerset railway and access up hill to the barrows on the Quantocks.
