Re: Broad Down, Farway Prehistoric Cup by AngieLake on Monday, 25 August 2008

The rare and beautiful black shale prehistoric 'Farway Cup' held by Exeter City Museum (see site page 'Royal Albert Memorial Museum', currently closed for refurbishment until Spring 2010) was found during the 1868 excavations of a barrow at Broad Down, Farway, by the Rev. Richard Kirwan, the rector of the local parish of Gittisham.
Quoting from 'Treasures of Ancient Devon', Devon Books, 1996 editon:

"The barrow displayed an interesting sequence of funerary practice which Kirwan interpreted as follows: first, a levelled platform of flints had been laid on the old ground surface; it displayed signs of burning (probably of burnt brushwood or furze). Above this was a bed of charcoal which Kirwan saw as a funerary pyre. This contained nodules of red ochre and iron pyrites 'which occurred in a quantity suggesting deliberate collection', and on which a deposit of calcined human bone had been placed. The cup must have been placed in the mound after the cremated bone; it lay close to it, but slightly higher in the mound. It is unburnt. A large barrow was then erected over the deposit."
