mfrincu visited on 19th Feb 2014 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 5 Access: 2 Requires a very long walk from the visitor center, however if you are in Mojave you should go out and explore. There are some dirt roads leading to it but nothing compares to a 3hr round trip hike through the desert in winter! You get to see lots of animals too.

Rock Art in The Southwest

The coordinates are given for the Tortoise Shell Mountain not the site itself. The entire area is full of sites containing ancient petroglyphs. Take some time to explore, look for the dark volcanic rock used by ancient Indian tribes to engrave petroglyphs. We explored the southern side of the mountain and discovered this site after a 2 hour hike from the Hole-in-the-Wall visitor center. Just park the car there and head out East towards the Tortoise shell Mountain. Once at its base turn right, cross a fence for cattle and keep near the base of the mountain. You will walk in a dried wash for a while. You will see a sign after some time marking the site. There is another smaller site near the Hole-in-the-Wall visitor center. Please note that most sites in the Mojave desert are unmarked so feel free to explore and ask around.
