The LWL-Museum für Archäologie in Herne (North Rhine–Westphalia, Germany) deals with the 250.000 year old history of humans in Westphalia. The concept of the architecture and exhibitions is that the visitor is guided through an archaeological excavation. Therefore, the exhibition halls are beneath the ground surface. The floor of the exhibition rooms resembles soil, rock or sand and presents the artefacts, skeletons and other finds as if they were unearthed recently.

The museum has one of the biggest archaeological collections in North-Rhine Westphalia. It has many important findings from the prehistory on display, e.g. the Chambered Tomb 1 of Warburg, finds from the Warburg-Daseburg Henge or the Urn of Gevelinghausen among many others.
