Kōzen-ji temple
Kōzen-ji temple submitted by Aska : Site in Hokkaidō Japan Front garden with cherry blossoms (Vote or comment on this photo)
Matsumae, situated at the southernmost point of Hokkaidō, was a frontier town for the Tokugawa shogunate. Kōzen-ji is one of the temples in the central castle area in Matsumae town, well known for the fine cherry tree in front of the temple. It has a hidden dry landscape garden behind the building.

The Matsumae clan was exempted land tax (=rice grains) because of the cold climate. They traded with the Ainu people and offered trading goods with them, such asnorthern sea products and fur, to the shogunate.

The town has suffered several severe fires and the bombing during the Meiji restoration battle, the castle (partially) and several Buddhist temples remain. In spite of its cold climate, the town is known for (slow and late) cherry blossoms.
