The Matsumae clan was exempted land tax (=rice grains) because of the cold climate. They traded with the Ainu people and offered trading goods with them, such asnorthern sea products and fur, to the shogunate.
The town has suffered several severe fires and the bombing during the Meiji restoration battle, the castle (partially) and several Buddhist temples remain. In spite of its cold climate, the town is known for (slow and late) cherry blossoms. Official site in English
