"Windsor Mound (12R1) was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. The Adena/ Hopewell ... was first described as a nearly circular structure, nearly a hundred and fifty feet in diameter and fifteen feet high. Bike paths and excavations [have] damaged the site, slightly altering the shape of the mound.
"Sometime before 1882, the site was excavated by digging straight down through the mound. Much of the integrity of Windsor was maintained until amateur archaeologists excavated the site between 1986 and 1988. They excavated roughly one third of the mound and after completing work, the center of the mound was left open until 1991. At that time, the Upper White River Archaeological Society and archaeologists from Ball State University began documenting the site, looking at the soil profiles and materials collected. After those excavations were completed, the site was backfilled in 1993.
"Thirty-four isolated skulls were located in a stone structure within the mound that housed an intact female burial. Underneath the burial, amateur archaeologists discovered over three hundred shell disc beads. Also located nearby were four sandstone tablets. Isolated skulls are not an unusual artifact to find in an Adena Mound, however the large number of them at this site is unique. Two cremations and a separate, intrusive burial were also documented. This suggests reutilization of the mound as a burial place over time. The separate burial was found with cut antler tines, an antler drift, a bone scraper, a beaver tooth, and turtle shell.
"Like other mounds in eastern Indiana, further study of the Windsor Mound could help the understanding of the Adena ceremonial complex. Although limited at this site due to past disturbances, intact archaeological materials could help researchers understand the relationship of mound complexes in the Ohio River Valley."
- "Archaeology News from the Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology (DHPA)", June 2018.
The site lies south of White River and north of West Windsor Road on private land. There is no access although the site is marked with signage on the road and may be seen across the fields at the edge of a tree line.
