Natural Stone / Natural Feature in Honshū

'Gan-kai' means 'sea of stones', along with that of neighboring "Yano-no Gankai", is selected as one of "The 100 selected Japanese Geographic Features". It/they look like a stone avalanche "Nabekura-kei", the process of formation is different, 'gan-kai' was originally a huge homogeneous rock shelf of granodiorite then crashed in to pieces by rain, frost and ice which sank into cracks and joints.

There are 3 flows on the slope of a mountain, they meet at the foot : the eastern one "Ō-gōro (great rolling)" (34.53956N,133.08203E - 34.53775N,133.07968E, 350m); the central one "Nala-gōro (central rolling)" (34.54108N,133.080880E - 34.53828N,133.08035E, 350m) and Zenigame gōro (small turtles rolling)" (34.54102N,133.07999E - 34.53703N,07808E, 650m).
