Qenko
Qenko submitted by Michelledubois : Near Cuzco is at a site called Qenqo, which is a monstrous rock all carved out with tunnels inside, and the whole upper surface is a maze of sculpted surfaces. The stone is andesite. The "thing" in this photo creates a perfect Puma head shadow 2 times a year. Nobody knows its true purpose. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Temple in Cusco Province, Peru.

An Inca ceremonial site dedicated to crop fertility.

The site has several elements, but like many Incan sites appears at its most basic to be a striking natural rock formation, with added or enhanced carving. At Qenko this includes a semicircular wall with nineteen niches around the main stone formations, carved altars and surfaces in a passageway between two huge upright formations, and carved channels on top of the rock surfaces (no longer accessible to the visitor. The wall niches may be associated with the play of shadows at different times of the year, associated with planting and harvesting. The name comes from the Quenchay language, meaning zigzag, referring to both the labyrinthine path between the two rock formations, as well as the carved channels atop the rock.

There are two other outcrops of stone to the immediate north-east of this main area. Those outcrops also shown the mysterious carvings typical of the culture: steps to nowhere in particular, graceful curves and angles.

The site was declared a Cultural Heritage (Patrimonio Cultural) of the Cusco Region by the Peruvian National Institute of Culture.
