The allure of the open road, the freedom to explore at your own pace, and the promise of adventure are just a few reasons why camper vans have soared in popularity. Buying a used camper van can be a fantastic way to embrace this lifestyle without the hefty price tag of a brand-new model. However, it's a significant investment, and a thorough check is crucial to ensure you're getting a reliable home on wheels.

Exterior Examination

Before you even step inside, give the camper van's exterior a meticulous once-over.

• Bodywork and Rust: Look for any signs of rust, especially around the wheel arches, window seals, and underneath the vehicle. Bubbling paint or visible corrosion can indicate more significant problems. Check for dents, scratches, and any poorly repaired accident damage.
• Tyres: Inspect the condition of the tyres, including the tread depth and sidewalls for any cracks or bulges. Uneven wear could point to alignment issues. Don't forget to check the spare tyre too.
• Windows and Seals: Examine all windows for chips or cracks. Crucially, inspect the rubber seals around the windows and doors for any signs of perishing, cracking, or gaps, as these are common areas for water ingress.
• Roof: If possible, check the condition of the roof. For pop-top roofs, ensure the mechanism operates smoothly and the canvas is free from rips or mould. Look for any damage, such as from overhanging branches, and check the seals around any roof lights or vents.
• Fixtures and Fittings: Test any external features like awnings, bike racks, or ladders to ensure they are secure and function correctly.

The Habitation Area

The interior is where you'll be living, so it needs to be comfortable, functional, and, most importantly, dry.

• Layout and Condition: Does the layout suit your needs in terms of seating, sleeping arrangements, and storage? Check the condition of the upholstery, curtains, and flooring for wear and tear.
• Appliances: Test all onboard appliances. This includes the fridge, cooker (gas hobs should have at least two rings), microwave, heater, and water heater.
• Damp and Mould: This is a critical check. Look for any signs of damp, such as a musty smell, staining or discolouration on walls or ceilings (especially in corners and around windows), or soft, spongy-feeling wallboards.
• Electrics and Plumbing: Test all lights, sockets, and the control panel. If there's a leisure battery, enquire about its age and condition. Check the water system, including taps, shower (if fitted), and toilet, looking for leaks and ensuring the pump works correctly.

Under the Bonnet

A camper van is both a home and a vehicle, so its mechanical soundness is paramount.

• Mileage: While low mileage might seem appealing, a van that has been regularly used is often a better bet than one that has sat idle for long periods, as inactivity can lead to its own set of problems.
• Service History: A full and detailed service history is a strong indicator that the van has been well-maintained.
• Test Drive: Always take the camper van for a thorough test drive covering various road types and speeds.
Many people looking for a reliable base vehicle for their adventures often search for a 'VW Transporter camper for sale' due to its reputation for durability and a wide range of conversion possibilities. Regardless of the make or model, applying these checks diligently will stand you in good stead.

If you're not confident in your ability to check everything, consider taking a knowledgeable friend or paying for a professional inspection. Happy camping!
