A beautiful home has neat and clean carpets. An essential detail for the style of every room, carpets give the room personality and create a pleasant feeling of home. Carpet maintenance can seem complicated and tedious, but if you take our advice and pay regular attention to your carpets, they will always look good with minimal effort.

Dirt in the carpet tears the yarns and damages the structure, so it loses its shine and becomes dull. Regular cleaning maintains carpets better than chemical cleaning treatments or washing.

Carpet maintenance

Proper care of carpets is important both for their beauty and for clean air in your home. Floors and carpets collect a lot of dust and all kinds of dirt. Regular cleaning, at least once a week, with a competitive, powerful vacuum cleaner, will result in carpets that are always clean and have pleasant air in the home.

This may be the easiest strategy to keep carpets and floors clean at all times:

1. Regular and thorough vacuuming, especially in high-traffic areas, prolongs the life of carpets and prevents the build-up of dirt, lint, hair and dust. Proper vacuuming means at least five to six passes with the carpet head. Vacuuming should be done in several directions. Vacuum cleaners equipped with HEPA filters remove all fine particles (such as allergens and dust). Clean the vacuum cleaner bag often, as this increases its efficiency and protects the appliance. Regularly clean under carpets as well, as far as possible, or at least at their edges.

2. Steam cleaning is a very simple and highly effective method of maintenance. If vacuuming can be done every time you need to and at least once a week, steam cleaning is recommended once a year or whenever necessary. Steam cleaning eliminates bacteria, dust mites and unpleasant odours.

3. Foot mats, by the front door, are a great method that protects carpets throughout the home. They are really useful if cleaned as frequently as possible.

4. Floors should also be cleaned regularly, depending on the material they are made of, and wet cleaning (with appropriate solutions, steam or simply vacuuming with a mop) protects carpets.

5. For good carpet care, always use only the right substances (never bleach, as this will damage the colours) and protect them (with curtains or blinds) from direct sunlight for long periods.

A few extra tips and tricks are useful and will make regular carpet maintenance even more effective:

  • Insist on areas where people sit and walk, and vacuum these areas crosswise, from several directions, especially if carpets are thick and/or plush;

  • put a teaspoonful of bicarbonate in the vacuum cleaner bag, because this way unpleasant smells disappear when vacuuming;

  • always clean the vacuum cleaner bag before use. Ideally, clean and wash it, if possible, after each use;

  • spray carpets with a solution of one part white vinegar to two parts water, using a spray bottle, before weekly vacuuming; this will clean carpets better.

Carpet cleaning

Most carpet manufacturers recommend steam cleaning or systems that use high temperature water. Cleaning products should be suitable for the type of fibre the carpet is made of. Synthetic fibres are the most practical and can be cleaned easily. For natural fibres, whether linen, jute, wool or silk, you should use a special carpet soap or shampoo that does not contain chemicals that can attack the fibres.

Consider a few tips if you choose to clean carpets at home

1. Deep cleaning of carpets must be done before they get very dirty, otherwise it will be very difficult. How often you need to do this depends on the traffic in the house (take pets into account), but also on the type of carpets. Thick, natural fibre carpets should be cleaned more often, carpets and synthetic carpets less often, precisely because their regular maintenance is efficient.

2. Vacuum the carpet thoroughly both before and after cleaning: before cleaning, it should be vacuumed to remove as many impurities as possible, and after cleaning with water, steam or various solutions, to collect the rest of the impurities removed by cleaning and to pick up the fabric threads. Ideal for this operation are wet&dry vacuum cleaners, which can be used on dry or wet surfaces equally effectively.

3. For stubborn stains, solutions are depending on the type of stain and its age. You can use commercial foam-based carpet cleaning solutions, or solvents or solutions that you have around the house anyway. Clean the spot where there is a stain, but also around the stain, so as not to leave a "bright eye" on the carpet, as visible as the stain.

4. Always use a cloth or sponge and never pour carpet cleaning solution directly on the stain.

5. Dishwashing detergent is also very good for carpets. Mix a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid with a cup of hot water. Use the solution immediately for food and grease stains. Use a sponge dipped in the solution, rub the stain well and then blot and/or vacuum the spot.

6. Use a solvent oil or nail polish remover that does not contain acetone. It is very good for paint, oil or stubborn old grease stains.

7. Mix one cup of white vinegar with two cups of water and spray on the carpet. Let it work for at least an hour, then vacuum. The water evaporates and vacuuming removes all impurities. The operation is done on a thoroughly vacuumed carpet beforehand. The solution gives the colours in the carpet a richness and a clean look.

8. For a dirty carpet, combine one part dishwashing detergent and three parts water. Put the solution in a spray bottle with a foam system. Spray the foam formed onto the carpet in an even layer and let it work for a few hours. Vacuum the carpet again (it should be vacuumed thoroughly beforehand). Repeat if necessary. The carpet will come to life and clean spectacularly. For very dirty carpets, add a tablespoon of ammonia powder to the solution.

9. Some carpets, even if not very dirty, smell bad. Get rid of this smell with baking soda. Sprinkle baking soda powder on the carpet as evenly as possible. Let it work for 30-60 minutes, then vacuum the carpet thoroughly.

Maintenance of new carpets

A new carpet radically improves the air in your home, but it needs special attention. There is a misconception that a new carpet should only be vacuumed after it has been well walked on. A new carpet can be vacuumed without damage 7-10 days after it has been laid. The amount of yarn extracted from the carpet in the first few weeks of use is greater, but will not affect its appearance or performance in any way. Furthermore, regular cleaning of the new carpet is the best way to maintain it.

Use sentinel carpets, which save the new carpet. It is a good idea to protect the new carpet with an intermediate carpet that collects dirt and is easy to shake out and clean.

Clean as soon as it gets dirty. Abandoned stains are hard to get out, so it is very important to remove them immediately. Solid residues can be removed with a knife, and greasy residues are treated with degreasing solutions, placed on an absorbent cloth, by dabbing only. Liquids are cleaned with a clean absorbent cloth, also by blotting. Remove traces with shampoo or dishwashing detergent or with special carpet cleaning products.

Well-maintained carpets make the whole house look neat, so it's worth paying attention to them at least once a week. In addition, a home where carpets are properly vacuumed is a healthy home, free of allergens and dust in the air.
