Stanton Drew I
Stanton Drew I submitted by RichFox : This is one of three drawings inspired by my first ever trip to Stanton Drew stone circle. I used a pointillism technique, black ink on Bristol board. I have mounted prints for sale if anyone is interested. Enjoy! (Vote or comment on this photo)
Hobbies are very important to our lives. It is vital that people have things they are passionate about and enjoy. It could be something in the areas of music, arts, games, or any other number of things. It is important that we spend our time constructively, and use those passions we have to help better ourselves and be more well rounded human beings.

It could just be something passive like binge watching Netflix or watching a reality TV about people winning at a mobile jackpot casino. This obviously means that if someone has no hobby or passion they can’t use one to help better themselves and be a more well rounded human being. Not that you cannot better yourself and be a more well rounded human being without a hobby, just that you cannot use a hobby to do that if you don’t have a hobby in the first place. But, I digress.

Now, one big problem many people have is choosing a hobby that is right for them. It is important we choose a hobby we will be passionate about and enjoy. Otherwise, it could grow to become more of a chore than a hobby.

It will begin to feel like something you have to do rather than something you want to do. And that would defeat the whole purpose! It is supposed to be something tangible and wonderful that you can sink time into that you will enjoy, not detest.

So, to try and help you along a bit, I have some of my favourite hobbies that I have personally tried! These are in no particular order, but I hope they may help you find one you sincerely enjoy!

Painting

Painting is an amazing way to escape this world and make another in any way you wish. You can mix and match colors to your heart's content and create a world more beautiful than one could imagine.

It was actually one of the first hobbies I ever sunk any reasonable amount of time into. I really enjoy oil painting, and although I’m far from a master, I have been able to make some paintings that I could be proud of and even feel good enough about to gift to friends!

Furthermore, painting is not only an amazingly beautiful form of art, it also has advantages to its main counterpart, which is drawing. For instance, when painting things such as landscapes, you don't need to be as precise as when you are drawing.

In comparison, if you are drawing you need a very steady hand and an immense eye for detail. Although painting can be easier than drawing, it does have some cons. Specifically, cost, which can be many times more expensive than drawing.

This is because you need paints, an easel, brushes, canvas (if you are using oil paints or acrylics), and a well ventilated area such as a studio. Some paints, thinners, or mediums can give off toxic fumes that are bad to breathe.

On the other hand, when drawing, all you need is an old pencil and a sheet of printer paper. In addition, even though painting can be easier than drawing in some applications, it can also be much harder especially if you are painting things with very complex shapes or detail.

Given these facts, when you weigh the pros and cons, painting is still an amazing way to express yourself, using colors to make emotions visible, and have fun in the actual act of putting paint on the canvas.

The thing to remember about painting or any other hobby is that you aren’t going to be able to pick up a brush and be a master in a day, or a week, or probably even a month!

Mastering a skill takes time and you should stick with something if you chose to do it as a hobby. Try and stay in the mindset that you are doing your hobby for fun, not to be good at it. It is important to try and improve, but it is more important to not grow to hate your hobby.

Playing an Instrument

Music is one of the most beautiful and universal forms of art in the world. It doesn’t matter where you come from, or what culture you live in, music can convey emotions that speech never could.

From personal experience, playing an instrument is a wonderful experience. Simply the knowledge that the music is coming from you is awe inspiring. The fact that you can make something beautiful is a great feeling.

Instruments are some of the most popular hobbies around. Everyone probably knows at least one person who plays some kind of instrument, or perhaps sings. Chorus is still music, and I think it should be thought of in the same way as an instrument.

So, if you want to have a hobby that will never get old, and can be beautiful and nice even when you are a beginner, then playing an instrument is a good choice. Even simple tunes can be incredibly moving.

Poetry

I would be very hesitant to call myself a poet. I have no published works, and I don’t even really know any rules of poetry. I just kind of put words together in a way that sounds like it has a rhythm that rhymes and go with it.

But you know what? That is the beauty of poetry. It is about you and what you want to convey or how you feel. Even though there are “rules” to poetry, you don’t really even need to follow them!

Of course, it could help your poem sound better if you stick to some rules, but they are not entirely necessary. Poetry is a free form art that can suit itself to what each person is trying to convey.

It is also a very easy hobby to get into, as it is cheap and all you need is time to sit down and think about how to convey your ideas.

However, if there is one tip I could give you, it is that a thesaurus and dictionary are very useful! Don’t be afraid or feel like it is “cheating” to look up synonyms for words or what words rhyme with a word you want to use.

With many thanks to Rich Fox, Kinsalegreg and Marc Toppel for their kind help and support of this article, including their lovely photos.
