Woman running When you think about running, you’re probably remembering all those times you had to run laps in school. It might have been completely unbearable and difficult for you, and there’s a chance you swore to never run like that ever again - but let’s try to flip the script. Everyone knows how good exercise is for both our physical and mental well-being. Some of the many benefits include improved brain performance, weight management and loss, better quality of sleep, improved bodily function, boosted mood and energy levels and so much more. While you can definitely take advantage of these perks with any physical activity, there are a few reasons that you might want to consider integrating running into your workout routine.

Not only does running - or even jogging - help burn a significant amount of calories, but it also helps improve your cardiovascular system to become more efficient. Running also helps build stronger bones and help prevent chronic illnesses like arthritis, high cholesterol, hypertension and more, while also strengthening and leaning out the muscles of your entire body.

These are only a few of the health benefits that you’ll be able to see once you start running - but starting might actually be the biggest problem of them all. There are a lot of people that claim to absolutely hate running because of how difficult and strenuous it is. They don’t like feeling completely out of breath and might find running to be an exercise that’s pretty hard to sustain and stick with, but here are a few tips that will hopefully help you start your running journey!

Make It a Habit By Starting Slow

One major reason that a lot of people inevitably fall out of running is because they put too much pressure on themselves immediately despite having little to no experience at all. While it helps to set goals in your mind, setting the bar too high right at the beginning is a recipe for motivation loss and anxiety associated with exercise.

If you’re facing this issue yourself, try resetting your mindset and attitude regarding exercise. Remember that exercise is meant to be a long term habit that you do for the rest of your life rather than a handful of sessions that need to be done before you stop. Appropriately, a saying that applies well to this is that exercise should be a marathon and not a sprint - set yourself up for the long run and enjoy the ride instead of constantly anticipating the end.

With exercise being a long term commitment, there’s really no point in expecting too much of yourself when it’ll only lead to burnout and negative feelings associated with working out. When you’re just starting out, it’s perfectly okay to start slow—no one becomes great at something in their first attempt.

It doesn’t matter if you have to walk in between a few bursts of running, or if you have to take breaks in between—the most important thing is that you keep showing up and doing the work. The more you run, the easier it will be to form the habit. Overtime, you will get faster and stronger, but make sure to enjoy the journey while you get there.

Make it Fun

Another reason that people find running completely unappealing is that they see it as a boring sport. Running on a treadmill means running in place and staring at the same spot the whole time, while running outside means listening to nothing but the chatter of everyday life. It’s a very common complaint, but you can spice up your run by listening to some music.

Many runners listen to music when they’re running, and for good reason too. When you create a running playlist filled with your favorite tracks, running becomes something less dreadful because you’ll actually be excited to listen to your music.

However, music isn’t your only option. Some runners actually listen to podcasts or audiobooks instead of music, and they make running more exciting and enjoyable by only allowing themselves to resume listening when they’re running. The anticipation of what comes next keeps them running as the days go by.

And if you prefer to run on the treadmill in your gym, then another option that you can consider is watching episodes from your favorite television shows available on streaming platforms. The problem with listening to music is that you’re all too aware about the estimated amount of time a song takes to finish, and that could keep you from forgetting about the time you’ve spent running. With television shows, there are no clear markers for how much time has passed—apart from the end of the episode—which makes time fly by so much more quickly.

Dress Appropriately

The last thing that you can do to make running more enjoyable is to wear the right outfit. Not only will a great workout outfit help you feel more comfortable, secure and confident when running, but getting cute new pieces can actually make you more excited to run and show them off.

When picking out pieces to wear for your next run, make sure that you find ones that offer you enough coverage and support. This mostly applies to your leggings and sports bras—how well your shirt is fitted is completely up to you and your preferences.

Another thing to consider is your running shoes. You can’t just use any pair of sneakers that you find lying around because your running shoes might be the most important thing you wear for your runs. Not only do they help your performance during your workout, but they can also be the only thing that separates you from a major injury.

Apart from the fit of your shoes, make sure that you find a pair with a thick enough sole that it can take the brunt of the impact when your feet hit the ground. The last thing you want is all that force going straight to your knees and back.
