Finding and buying gold for cheap is a great way to put a little extra money in your pocket. Although you might have an image of an old-time prospector panning for gold, you can easily find it in some places you might not have thought to look. You probably won't find anything as amazing as this prehistoric gold hat now in Berlin museum (picture left) but it will still be worth your while.

Check your Backyard First

Maybe not literally the backyard, but all good treasure hunts start at home. After all, you'd hate to be the person who got scooped on the treasure right under their nose, right?

There can be a high gold or silver content in the strangest places, from old picture frames and cutlery sets to the weird tea set your great-grandmother swore by but that has not been used since. Start with family heirlooms- they’re usually passed from generation to generation for a reason. Old jewellery is a good place to check, even pieces that might be tarnished or broken, because they can all be resold as silver or cash for gold.

Speaking of the backyard, you can check that too. On estates, lands, or acreages, you can often find old cars, old buildings, or even old luggage and chests that will literally have treasure in them. So take the time to explore the unexplored nooks and crannies on your property, the places where only spiders go, because those are where important and valuable goods can be found.

Charity and Thrift Shops

Charity and thrift shops can collect the strangest things. Whether it’s donated because it’s seen as just clutter that needs to be taken out of the house, comes from an estate, or finds its way there in many ways, extremely valuable items can end up tucked in the corners of these shops. Take the time to look at even the things that don’t seem like they would be valuable. Gold and silver that you can sell for cash can be hidden even in things that don’t seem to be gold or silver.

Remember, looks aren't everything. Even if you're looking at a piece and it seems it shouldn't be worth much, there might be a high gold or silver content. For instance, people will commonly see a silver painting frame and assume it's either aluminium or low-grade silver. However, it might have a high silver content or even be white gold, which can command a high price.

Garage and Boot Sales

Sometimes people choose not to donate to charity or thrift shops and instead want to sell things out of their homes directly. Garage sales are popular because the seller can keep all the profits by simply setting up in front of their garage. Boot sales, where people sell out of the boot of their car, are also popular for this reason.

These are phenomenal places to find high-quality gold and silver pieces that you can sell for cash. You can get them cheaply because people don't realize what they have and just want to get them out of their houses. And these things tend to have been in the home for a very long time, lending to their value.

Book Stores and Book Cases

This one might seem strange, but older and first-edition books tended to have gold inlaid in them. Sometimes this was on the cover or painted along the edges of the pages. This gold is actually surprisingly easy to extract from the books, making it a good source of gold. So take a good look at the old books in your home, and keep an eye out on old bookshop shelves and in thrift stores. Of course the antique book itself may be worth more than the contents of the gold so make sure to get it valued first.

Look in Unlikely Places

Gold can be found in many seemingly strange places and then sold to reputable gold buyers who can turn it into cash in your pocket. To find out how to get more money for your gold, you can get an estimated quote over the phone or online with companies like Cheshire Gold XChange.
