Roguelike games might be one of the oldest gaming genres in the world but the fact that it still to this day, has remained to be so popular amongst a lot of players around the world, says a lot about it. But it’s been decades since many of us have played some of the popular roguelike titles in the gaming universe and apparently a lot has changed in the genre! But before we jump any further, there’s a big and not-so-big difference between a roguelike and a roguelite game (both are a sub-genre of RPG). And that is, a Roguelike game puts a lot of emphasis on death which makes it so much more challenging than any other gaming genre in the market, because you have to try your best every time as there is no room for errors. Whereas the Roguelite game, just like the roguelike, does everything mostly the same but keeps it a little less cold-hearted and saves your progress as you move forward.
However, In this article, I am going to talk about the evolution of roguelike games. So, Let me give you a ride back to the past from where it all started at first.
This subgenre came into being when it got its first game in 1975 called Dragon and Dungeons. Games then looked like some kids drawing, because of all the technological limitations but Roguelike games were so popular among gamers even then. Some other popular roguelikes back then were Unbelievable Maze, Ananias and Enchanted Cave 2. Ring any bell?
The gaming world has totally changed over the years, the games these days have way better photo-realistic graphics, they have an unpredictability that fans love and a depth of story that captivates the players to their very bits. All these advancements have proven to be major factors in changing our favorite “roguelike” games.
RPG games introduced a whole new way of gaming which doesn’t just include great gameplay but enhances the experience by adding a storyline which is captivating and deep, games like OSRS is one of the most popular MMORPG game that is pushing that direction, with players craving OSRS Gold to make them stand out in the game. Roguelike gaming developed a significant number of role-playing games over the years. Dungeons and Dragons are seen as the pioneer in RPG gaming.
Some of the other best games that the genre has seen is the franchise called Diablo, I am sure Diablo has a bigger fan-base than almost all of the other dungeon crawlers or roguelike games. The Diablo franchise itself has come a long way, from being a 2D game with limited actions and being not so visually great to a game with much immersive gameplay and such handsome graphics that comes with Diablo 3, which if you haven’t played yet, you definitely should get a Diablo 3 account because roguelike games don’t get any better than this!
Roguelike games have come a long way too, the old games were more focused on mere action mainly because of the graphical limitations, the games back then were supposed to give players a hard time. But games these days are supposed to give players a good time with a beautiful storyline to make you fall in love with it instead of just breaking keyboards and controllers trying to slay through hordes of enemies.
Another main difference is how roguelikes have become so unpredictable these days, every level unfolds new mysteries and you find yourself fighting a totally fresh breed of monsters. This surprising nature of games is being loved by the fans and that is yet another reason why this genre is getting so much attention these days.
The world of gaming has come a long way from home, from dungeon crawlers looking like they were made on an Etch A Sketch to games that now play on 4K Resolutions. And the best part is how there is just no stopping and the world of video gaming is only getting better. With many thanks to Matt Williamson for the Creative Commons photo.
