They had set up a tent where finds were displayed. The carved chalk artwork was very interesting and had been found in situ. I was a bit suspicious at first! I Talked to Pat who told us where and what had been found then we set off to the Cursus.
They were digging the end of it but nothing has been found there. On to the Longbarrow (Amesbury 42) across the road. Geophys had shown something but it turned out to be tree throws. An antler pick was found at the bottom of the ditch. It was made in one phase not two as previously thought.
Then we walked along the ridgeway to the Palisade trenches which turned out to be Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age not Neolithic!
The most exciting part was at West Amesbury in a garden/field at the back of Antrobus House by the river Avon. Mike Parker Pearson was digging there and looked very harassed and muddy. They had found Paleolithic and loads of Mesolithic flakes that were literally falling off their boots. No ceremonial path to the river has been found but there was a ring ditch/barrow/ or something that could have held a stone or wooden marker. The most exciting part being the ditch contained cobbled flint. Apparently the archaeo's have never seen anything like it before. SM consent is needed before any more excavation! Wow could this be anything like the path to the river Avon from Durrington Walls?
