Martin Flexman from our app partner Senet Mobile has just released an update to our iPhone app - Pocket Guide: Megaliths. The app accesses the Portal's database of sites worldwide, showing their locations on a sophisticated built in map, as well as with text search facilities. There is also an Android version, of which more below. Both apps work on iPads and Android tablets as well as phones. To me, the best thing about both apps is that they download basic location info on all the sites in our database onto your phone or tablet, so you can navigate to them without needing a mobile phone signal.

When you do have a phone signal you can use the app to access additional information and photos sourced from our site. Other features allow you to bookmark and come back to specific sites, and to easily store notes on various sites whilst in the field. The app also has other useful features such as sun and moon timings and a unique height finding function ideal for estimating the heights of features.

Martin has updated all the internals to support all the latest IOS 9 and iPhone features. Don’t take my word for it - here are a couple of independent reviews from the App Store:

Realsting says: A very well produced app and nice looking. lots of useful information (and updatable) which links directly with the excellent website for further info. Good functionality that allows the saving of pics and note taking. Where this app shines is its sheer convenience of seeing on an intuitive map all the places of interest.. a must have if you're out walking and want to know about a particular place. Worth the download in my opinion.

Oldblagger says: If you have any sort of interest then a must download! Fantastic to be able to access everything at your fingertips. Top marks for getting this out there in app land. Cheaper than a bag of chips.

Pocket Guide: Megaliths is available from the app store for a small fee, or you can have a free copy as part of your Megalithic Portal Society membership.

We also have an Android app which works in essentially the same way, It is a bit less sophisticated due to the limitations of Android apps, only having one ‘view’ rather than the separate map and text view you can quickly switch between on the iPhone. But it’s still good, and very again inexpensive to try out, or you can ask for a download code with your membership.

So whether you would want to go as far as to sell your Samsung S7 is up to you, either the Android or iPhone apps make an excellent companion for the modern megalith hunter. GPS navigation really takes the trial and error and some (but not all) of the scrambling through bushes out of the experience of tracking down ancient sites to visit.

If you already have one of our apps installed it will update itself to the latest version automatically. Martin is also working on an update to the Android version, I'll let you know when that's ready to try.

With many thanks to Martin Flexman for the app update. You can see more app preview screens in our gallery.

Long story, it needs a complete rewrite due to changes at Google's end. I'll try and get an update for you, hopefully later this year.

Hello, try doing 'Check Database' again.
It should prompt for this at the start but try it again.
It is under 'More' the bottom right button at the bottom.
You'll need a fairly good internet connection as it's quite a large download.
Any more problems let me know.
    Thanks
    Andy

I just did 'Check Database' on my copy and it deleted all the entries and I ended up with none!
But then I ran 'Check Database' again and they all installed and came back again.
I've never seen it do that before.
But it fixed itself OK. You can run 'Check Database' multiple times and it doesn't mind...
