Oenpelli
Oenpelli submitted by Thorgrim : The Runners These women have such energy, exuberence and joy of life that they make me feel good whenever I look at them. They don't appear to be running from an enemy so perhaps that curved line at the front is a bow and they are hunting. Or are they dancers and is that the crescent moon? This wonderfully fluid and dynamic rock painting is from Oenpelli, Unbalania in Northern Australia. I ... (Vote or comment on this photo)
One of the things I enjoy doing when I travel somewhere is running. I just love the feeling when I run and the destination and everything around me is unknown. It simply doesn’t matter which trail I would choose while running in the nearby park. Here each trail leads to a place new to me. I feel great and what’s most important I feel free. When I am in a new city or town, running on the pavement beats any other way go around the town. You of course move faster than having a walk, you don’t have to worry about your bike, and definitely you are not isolated from the surrounding like when driving a car. And above everything, running helps me stay fit all the time. Not to mention the money I save while running, but we will come to that later.

You feel everything differently

Running while on a vacation / holiday is something I started doing a few years back. The idea came to me while I was on a conference for a few days in Phoenix, Arizona. It was also the time I was training for my first half-marathon and I knew the food, drinks and going to bed late will ruin all my efforts so far. That’s why I decided to continue with my training. I realized I didn’t need anything special except of my running shoes. So, I decided to wake up every morning an hour before my colleagues and go for a quick run.

Luckily, it quickly became a habit I really enjoy. Now it helps me see the city from the perspective of a local resident, plus I get to see most of the tourist attractions at the same time. I’m no way a seasoned athlete, but I know the feeling when I run through a town or a city and notice something normal tourists will never have the chance to see. Your senses are at their peak while running, and what’s interesting is most people will just ignore you and you can perceive the sights and sounds of the place without any interruptions.

You will feel much better when you come back home

Another interesting thing that happens while you are on vacation is that you simply forget about calories and diet. It is something that has been already proven, but what stops you from doing some exercise while you are enjoying the local cuisine. We know we want to try something new, and the easiest way to do it is to try some local specialities. But after a few days of overeating and being inactive our body will start to complain.

If you start your day with running, you will feel better and should have more energy for sightseeing. Another problem most of us have when doing long distance travel is jet lag. It is very difficult to get used to the time change but running has helped me deal with jet lag successfully. Sticking to your daily routine while you are on a vacation will help you deal with it quickly and easily.

Another thing that happens if you forget about good eating and exercise during the vacation is that you will actually feel like a rug when you come back home and try to get back to normal. If you skip your run for a day or two you probably won’t feel any negative effects of not running. However, if you are staying there for more than a couple of days, feel free to go running first thing in the morning. Otherwise, you may have troubles getting back in shape.

Once you start running and keep doing it because you like it, not because you have to, it will change your mind and body. It will quickly become something you can’t wait to do the next morning and you may even feel bad when you skip it for some reason.

It won’t cost you anything

When people hear you run on your trips most of them will think you are some kind of superhero. And maybe you are, but not because you run, but because you will easily save $50 for an open bus tour for sightseeing. Simply put that money back in your pocket and jog and see all the sites at your own pace. It will be much more memorable for sure.

Running will also give you the chance to see much more of the city, plus it’s the cheapest way to stay fit. All you need is a pair of running shoes and something like this for running, and you are good to go. You can do it anywhere you like. Staying committed to running is easy and your overall lifestyle should have nothing to do with it.

If I take a quick look at the days when I decided to start running while I’m on a trip I believe everything would be different now. It would definitely be different if I decided to wake up later after a heavy night, and took a taxi or pay a bus sightseeing tour to get to know the town. Thankfully, I feel like I have made the right decision.

It doesn’t really cost you anything to start jogging today. And then when you go to a trip one day remember this text, get up early and take your time running into the unknown. You will be amazed how different things are and you can compare that feeling with the feelings and memories you already have from your previous vacations. I firmly believe that you will feel much more energized and ready for the day and remember – you create your memories yourself.
